2. Objectives

2.1. General objective

The project aims to examine factors affecting Vietnam’s agricultural exports to the EU market using the gravity model approach. Based on that, we propose some recommendations to promote positive factors, overcome negative factors, thereby boosting agricultural exports to the EU market.

2.2. Specific objectives

• Reviewing related literature on the factors affecting on agricultural exports.
• Systemizing theories of factors affecting agricultural exports from the gravity model's approach.
• Assessing the situation of Vietnam's agricultural exports to the EU market over the period of 2005 - 2017.
• Analyzing the factors and impact level of each factor affecting Vietnam's agricultural exports to EU market for the period of 2005 - 2017.
• Proposing solutions and recommendations to promote positive factors, overcome negative factors, thereby boosting Vietnam's agricultural exports to the EU market in the next period.

3. Creativeness and innovativeness

The European Union (EU) is currently Vietnam's second largest agricultural import market. However, the market share of Vietnamese agricultural products in this market is still low, not commensurate with the development potential between the two sides. Therefore, the study of factors affecting Vietnam's agricultural exports to the EU market has both theoretical and practical implications. This study uses gravity model and panel data for the period 2005-2017 to analyze the factors affecting Vietnam’s agricultural exports to the EU market. The results show that GDP per capita, population, institutional quality and WTO accession have a positive impact, while geographical distance, technology gap have a negative impact on agricultural exports. On that basis, combined with the qualitative analysis, the study proposes solutions to promote positive factors, overcome negative factors to boost Vietnam's agricultural exports to this market in the coming time.

4. Research results

• First, the study clarified the theoretical framework on factors affecting agricultural exports from developing countries to developed countries using the gravity model approach.
• Second, the study evaluated the status of Vietnam's agricultural exports to the EU market from 2005 to 2017.
• Third, the study analyzed the impact factors and the impact of each factor on Vietnam's agricultural exports to the EU market from 2005 to 2017. The study also pointed out the achievements, limitations and causes of restrictions on Vietnam's agricultural exports to the EU market.
• Fourth, from the research results, the study has proposed solutions and recommendations to promote positive factors, overcome negative factors, thereby boosting Vietnam's agricultural exports to the EU market in the coming time.
