2. Objective(s):

- Determine the chemical composition, analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of main compounds from some typical plant species in the North.

- Developed the technological process to create functional food products that support and treat arthritis.

3. Creativeness and Innovativeness:

- Using modern analytical methods to extract and determine the chemical structures of compounds from Morinda umbellata, Boehmeria nivea and Berchemia lineata.

- Study on making functional food products from plant species including Morinda umbellata, Boehmeria nivea and Berchemia lineata with supporting and treatment function of arthritis.

4. Research results:

The using situation of there herbs including: Morinda umbellata, Boehmeria nivea and Berchemica lineata is uncommon in the northern mountainous provinces

The ethyl acetate fraction of Morinda umbellata and Boehmeria nivea exhibited the highest in-inflammatory capacity with IC₅₀ 18,1 µg/ml and 17,8 µg/ml, respectively, which is basis for selecting fractions for isolation and determination of chemical structure.

Seven chemical compounds of morinda umbellata and boehmeria nivea were isolated: quercetin (N1) và β-sterol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (N2) were isolated from etyl acetate fraction of morinda umbellata and β-sitosterol (B1),luteolin-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (B2), (+)-Isolariciresinol (B3), Gingerglycolipid A (B4) và (-)-epicatechine (B5) were isolated from etyl acetate and water fractions of boehmeria nivea

The antibacterial activity of 7 compounds isolated from Morinda umbellata and Boehmeria nivea on 8 strains of fungi, yeast and bacteria resulted in: Compounds N1, B2, B4, B3, B4 exhibited good inhibitory activity with MIC values ​​of 200 μg/mL and 100 μg/mL. Compound B1 exhibited good inhibitory activity against Fusarium oxysporum with an MIC value of 50 μg/mL. Testing the anti-inflammatory activity of the compounds showed that B5 exhibited the best inhibitory activity on NO production on RAW264.7 macrophages in vitro, followed by B3 and B2, and B4 showed moderate anti-inflammatory activity. These results have added to the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects of these two herbs.

The formula of a functional food product to support the treatment of arthritis from research herbs called Bao Cot Bach Nien was developed and has been submitted for registration for appropriate publication at the Food Safety Department.
